Rasi Palan

Rasi Palan: horoscopes for all twelve Moon signs

Rasi Palan is the traditional horoscope read from your Moon sign. Choose your Rasi to read the day, week, month and year ahead, written from the real movement of the planets through the signs counted from your Moon.

Why the Moon sign

Vedic astrology reads daily life from the Moon, because the Moon moves quickly, about one sign every two and a quarter days, and stands for the mind and mood. Your Rasi is the sign the Moon occupied at your birth. If you do not know it, enter your birth date, time and place and it is found for you.

The twelve Rasis

Mesha (Aries), Rishabha (Taurus), Mithuna (Gemini), Kataka (Cancer), Simha (Leo), Kanya (Virgo), Tula (Libra), Vrischika (Scorpio), Dhanus (Sagittarius), Makara (Capricorn), Kumbha (Aquarius) and Meena (Pisces). Each is ruled by a planet: Mars rules Mesha and Vrischika, Venus rules Rishabha and Tula, Mercury rules Mithuna and Kanya, the Moon rules Kataka, the Sun rules Simha, Jupiter rules Dhanus and Meena, and Saturn rules Makara and Kumbha.

How the forecast is built

Each reading counts the houses from your Moon sign to where the planets are now. The Moon's daily position sets the day's tone, Chandrashtama marks the two days or so when the Moon passes your eighth sign, and the slower planets, Jupiter, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu, colour the month and year. Each reading also gives a lucky colour, number and direction from the ruling planet of the day.

Rasi or Nakshatra?

Your Nakshatra, the birth star, is a finer division of the Moon sign, and is used for Tarabalam and Chandrabalam when choosing good times. Rasi Palan gives the broad picture; for daily timing, pair it with your Nakshatra.

Personal readings

Reading the week and the year

The weekly reading follows the Moon through about three signs and notes the days of Chandrashtama. The monthly reading follows the Sun into its new sign, which in the Tamil calendar is also the start of the month, and the fast planets Mercury, Venus and Mars. The yearly reading is built around Guru Peyarchi and Sani Peyarchi, the changes of sign by Jupiter and Saturn, because they decide the larger themes of health, money, family and work for each Rasi. When Jupiter moves into the second, fifth, seventh, ninth or eleventh sign from your Moon, the year is traditionally considered open and helpful.

Frequently asked questions

What is my Rasi?

The sign the Moon was in when you were born. Enter your birth details to find it.

Is Rasi the same as my zodiac sign?

Not usually. Western Sun signs use the Sun; Rasi uses the Moon, and the Vedic zodiac is sidereal.

Why do Vedic and western signs differ?

The Vedic zodiac is fixed to the stars and is now about 24 degrees behind the western one.

What is Chandrashtama?

The days when the Moon passes the eighth sign from your Rasi, traditionally kept quiet for important starts.

How often is the horoscope updated?

The daily reading changes each day; weekly, monthly and yearly readings follow their own periods.

Can I read in Tamil?

Yes. Choose your language and the readings appear in it.

Which Rasi is lucky this year?

Each year Jupiter and Saturn favour some Rasis more; the yearly reading explains which houses they touch for you.

Do I need my birth time?

Only if the Moon changed sign on your birth date.

What are lucky colour and number?

They come from the planet ruling the day and its link to your Rasi.

How is this different from a personal reading?

Rasi Palan is shared by everyone with your Moon sign; a personal reading uses your full chart.

Can two people with one Rasi have different days?

Yes. Their Ascendant, Nakshatra and Dasha differ.

Where can I learn more about my Nakshatra?

Open the Nakshatra pages to read about your birth star.
