Gochara

Transit analysis: how today's planets meet your chart

Gochara is the study of the planets moving through the sky today, read against your birth chart. This analysis lists each moving planet, the house it occupies counted from your Moon and your Ascendant, the points it holds there in Ashtakavarga, and the dates when it changes sign.

Counting from the Moon

Classical Gochara counts from the Moon sign. Each planet has houses where it gives good results: Jupiter in the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th; Saturn in the 3rd, 6th and 11th; the Sun and Mars in the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th. A good position can be blocked by Vedha, an obstruction when another planet occupies a paired house at the same time. The analysis checks Vedha for you.

Counting from the Ascendant

Modern practice also reads transits by house from the Ascendant, showing which area of life the planet touches: career for the tenth, partnership for the seventh, home for the fourth. Both views appear side by side.

Slow and fast planets

Saturn, Jupiter, Rahu and Ketu shape the chapters of life, each staying in a sign for one to two and a half years. The Sun, Mercury, Venus and Mars colour weeks and months. The Moon sets the mood of each day. The analysis groups them so the long themes are not lost among daily changes.

Transits over natal planets

A slow planet passing over the exact degree of a birth planet is a sensitive moment. Saturn over the natal Moon, Jupiter over the natal Sun or Rahu over the Ascendant are listed with the days the contact is exact, including retrograde passes.

Transits and the Dasha

A transit can only give what the Dasha promises. If you are in the Dasha of Venus and Jupiter transits your seventh house, marriage themes are lit up. If the Dasha points elsewhere, the same transit is felt more quietly. Read the analysis with your current Dasha in view.

The Moon's monthly round

The Moon passes all twelve signs in about twenty-seven days. Its transit is the reason the same week can feel light on some days and heavy on others. The analysis marks the days the Moon crosses your eighth sign, your birth Nakshatra and the Nakshatras that are Vipat, Pratyak and Naidhana for you, so small plans can be moved by a day or two to a better slot.

Frequently asked questions

What is Gochara?

The Sanskrit term for transits, the current movement of the planets through the signs.

What is Vedha?

An obstruction that cancels a good transit when another planet sits in its paired house.

Should I count from the Moon or the Ascendant?

Both. The Moon shows the felt experience, the Ascendant shows the area of life.

How long does Jupiter stay in a sign?

About a year.

How long does Saturn stay in a sign?

About two and a half years.

What is a retrograde pass?

A planet appears to move backward and can cross the same degree up to three times.

Are eclipses included?

Yes. Solar and lunar eclipses falling near your natal planets are flagged.

What is Guru Peyarchi?

The Tamil name for Jupiter changing sign, a major annual event.

What is Sani Peyarchi?

Saturn changing sign, which happens about every two and a half years.

Do transits override my Dasha?

No. The Dasha sets what can happen; transits time it.

Can I get alerts?

Yes. Turn on reminders to be told before a major sign change.

Why do two websites show different transit dates?

They may use different Ayanamsa settings, which can shift a sign change by a day or more.
