Synastry

Synastry: comparing two charts the western way

Synastry lays two natal charts over each other and reads the aspects between one person's planets and the other's. It shows where two people flow easily, where they spark, and where they will need patience, and it complements the Porutham and Guna Milan used in Indian matching.

Inter-aspects

An inter-aspect is an angle between a planet in one chart and a planet in the other. Venus in one chart trine Mars in the other suggests natural attraction; the Moon conjunct the other's Sun suggests deep comfort; Saturn square the other's Moon can feel heavy until trust is built.

House overlays

Each person's planets fall into houses of the other's chart. If your Venus falls in your partner's seventh house, they may see you as a natural partner; your Saturn in their tenth may make you a steadying force for their career.

The composite chart

The composite chart takes the midpoint of each pair of planets to make a single chart for the relationship itself. Its Sun shows the purpose of the bond, its Moon the emotional climate, and its Venus how affection is shared.

Key contacts

Astrologers look first at the Sun, Moon, Venus, Mars and the Ascendant. Contacts between the two Moons describe daily ease; between Venus and Mars, attraction; between Mercury and Mercury, how you talk; and between Saturn and personal planets, commitment.

With Indian matching

Porutham and Ashtakoota compare the Moon's Nakshatra and sign in the sidereal zodiac, and are the main tools families use for marriage. Synastry adds a picture of personality and communication. Using both gives a fuller view.

Reading the result

The report scores the main harmonious and challenging contacts, explains the five strongest of each, and describes the composite Sun, Moon and Venus in plain words.

An example

Suppose one partner has the Moon in Cancer and the other has the Sun in Cancer within a few degrees. This is a classic sign of comfort: one feels understood, the other feels appreciated. If the same couple also has Mars in one chart square Mercury in the other, disagreements may flare quickly in conversation. The report would name both, the first as a strength to lean on and the second as an area where slowing down helps. Most relationships show a mix like this, and the value of synastry lies in knowing which is which.

Timing in a relationship

Transits to the composite chart can mark important years for a couple, such as Jupiter crossing the composite Sun or Saturn crossing the composite Moon.

Frequently asked questions

What is synastry?

The comparison of two natal charts through the aspects between them.

What is a composite chart?

A chart made from the midpoints of two people's planets.

Do we both need birth times?

For the Ascendant and house overlays, yes. Planet aspects can be read without them.

Families mainly use Porutham and Guna Milan; synastry adds detail on personality.

What is a good Venus contact?

Venus trine or conjunct the other's Sun, Moon or Mars.

Are hard aspects bad?

They bring friction that can be worked with; many lasting couples have them.

What does Saturn contact mean?

Commitment and responsibility, sometimes felt as restriction.

Can I compare friends or family?

Yes. Synastry works for any relationship.

Which zodiac is used?

The tropical zodiac, as in all western charts.

What orbs are used?

Up to about 6 degrees for major aspects, tighter for minor ones.

How is it different from Porutham?

Porutham uses the Nakshatras of the Moon; synastry uses all planets and their angles.

Can I see the Indian match too?

Yes. Open Porutham with the same birth details.
