Classical Yoga
Budha-Aditya Yoga
Budha-Aditya Yoga is the conjunction of Mercury (Budha) and the Sun (Aditya) in the same sign. It is linked with intelligence, communication skills, analytical ability and success in education and administration.
How Budha-Aditya Yoga forms and what it gives
Called Nipuna Yoga in some texts, the union of the Sun with Mercury gives a mind that is both bright and clear, the king's light joined to the prince's intelligence. Such natives are skilled in accounts, writing and speech, and are trusted for their counsel. When Mercury sits a few degrees away from the Sun, the yoga speaks more freely.
How it forms in a chart
Because Mercury never moves more than about 28 degrees from the Sun, the two share a sign in a large share of charts. The yoga is therefore judged by quality: the sign, the house, and whether Mercury is too close to the Sun and combust.
What it is said to give
Traditional results include sharp intellect, eloquence, administrative ability and recognition for knowledge. When it falls in the 1st, 4th, 5th, 9th or 10th house it is said to support careers in teaching, law, finance, writing or government service.
Strength, timing and cancellation
A Mercury more than about 14 degrees from the Sun is considered free of combustion and gives better results. Mercury in its own signs Gemini or Virgo, or the Sun in Leo or Aries, strengthens it. Results appear during Sun and Mercury periods.

The rule used here follows Phaladeepika.
What a Yoga is
In Jyotisha a Yoga is a specific combination of planets, signs and houses that classical texts single out for its results. Some promise status or wealth, some describe character, and a few describe difficulties. A Yoga only gives full results when the planets forming it are strong, unafflicted and activated by the Dasha of one of them.
Checking for Budha-Aditya Yoga in your chart
Yoga detection depends on exact house positions and lordships, which change with the Ascendant. Cast your birth chart to see which classical Yogas are present, how strong the participating planets are and when their periods run.
Common questions
How does Budha-Aditya Yoga form?
The description at the top of this page gives the classical rule. Detection depends on house lordships from your Ascendant, so the same planets can form it in one chart and not another.
When does Budha-Aditya Yoga give results?
Mostly during the Mahadasha or Antardasha of the planets that form it, and when they are strong by sign and house.
Is Budha-Aditya Yoga rare?
Some form of it appears in many charts. What matters is strength: well-placed, unafflicted planets give clear results; weak ones give mild results.
Can Budha-Aditya Yoga be cancelled?
Classical texts list conditions that weaken a Yoga, such as debilitation, combustion or affliction of the planets involved. A full chart reading checks these.
Where is Budha-Aditya Yoga described?
Phaladeepika
How do I check if I have Budha-Aditya Yoga?
Cast a free birth chart; the Yogas section lists every classical combination found, with the planets involved.
Why is Budha-Aditya Yoga so common?
Mercury always stays close to the Sun, so they often share a sign. Its strength depends on degrees and placement.
What does combustion do to this yoga?
A combust Mercury weakens the intellectual results, though many astrologers say the effect is softer for Mercury than for other planets.
