Vipareeta Raja Yoga

Vipareeta Raja Yoga, the “reversed” Raja Yoga, forms when the lords of the Dusthana houses, the 6th, 8th and 12th, are placed in one another’s houses. Difficulty is turned into gain: rivals, crises or losses end up benefiting the native.

How Vipareeta Raja Yoga forms and what it gives

Kalidasa in Uttara Kalamrita describes how the lords of the three hard houses, placed in one another's homes, cancel each other's harm, like two thorns removing each other. Losses, debts and illnesses become doors to advancement; others' troubles can turn to your gain. The yoga is felt most after a crisis, in the period of the lords involved.

How it forms in a chart

Three named varieties exist: Harsha Yoga (6th lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th), Sarala Yoga (8th lord in these houses) and Vimala Yoga (12th lord in these houses). The yoga is cleaner when the planets involved are not also lords of good houses.

What it is said to give

Texts describe success that comes through adversity: winning against opponents (Harsha), resilience and unexpected inheritance (Sarala), and wise spending, independence or spiritual gain (Vimala). Many self-made people and turnaround specialists have this pattern.

Strength, timing and cancellation

The Ascendant lord should be strong for the native to enjoy the results. The yoga shows most during the Dashas of the Dusthana lords. If the planets are also connected to the Ascendant or its lord, the gains can come with health or reputation tests first.

What a Yoga is

In Jyotisha a Yoga is a specific combination of planets, signs and houses that classical texts single out for its results. Some promise status or wealth, some describe character, and a few describe difficulties. A Yoga only gives full results when the planets forming it are strong, unafflicted and activated by the Dasha of one of them.

Common questions

How does Vipareeta Raja Yoga form?

The description at the top of this page gives the classical rule. Detection depends on house lordships from your Ascendant, so the same planets can form it in one chart and not another.

When does Vipareeta Raja Yoga give results?

Mostly during the Mahadasha or Antardasha of the planets that form it, and when they are strong by sign and house.

Is Vipareeta Raja Yoga rare?

Some form of it appears in many charts. What matters is strength: well-placed, unafflicted planets give clear results; weak ones give mild results.

Can Vipareeta Raja Yoga be cancelled?

Classical texts list conditions that weaken a Yoga, such as debilitation, combustion or affliction of the planets involved. A full chart reading checks these.

Where is Vipareeta Raja Yoga described?

Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra; named varieties in Uttara Kalamrita

How do I check if I have Vipareeta Raja Yoga?

Cast a free birth chart; the Yogas section lists every classical combination found, with the planets involved.

Why is it called reversed?

Because the lords of difficult houses spoil each other’s negative significations, producing gain from adversity.

Is Vipareeta Raja Yoga as good as Raja Yoga?

It works differently: it usually brings success after a struggle rather than steady progress.
